ASC On Tour

What is the ASC on Tour?

The American Shakespeare Center On Tour is the touring arm of the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. Direct from the stage of the ASC's celebrated Blackfriars Playhouse, the worlds only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre, the American Shakespeare Center On Tour boasts more than two decades worth of global touring experience on stages in 47 states, 5 foreign nations, and 1 US Territory. From the Globe Theatre in Neuss, Germany to the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California, this elite troupe stands as one of America’s foremost providers of quality entertainment to performing arts centers and educational institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. "We scour the country for the right 10-12 actors to perform all these roles in all of these plays," said ASC Artistic Director Jim Warren. "Not only are we looking for the right talent to do these shows in true rotating repertory (a great lost joy in today's theatre world), but we're also looking for personalities we think will gel into a dynamic, well-balanced ensemble on and off the stage. On top of all of that, we're also looking for singers and musicians because we perform all of our music live and unplugged.

Our History

The American Shakespeare Center on Tour has its origin in a professional traveling troupe named the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, founded by Jim Warren and Ralph Alan Cohen in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1988. Their first tour featured Richard III, which was performed at various venues throughout Virginia. In 1989, the SSE embarked on its first spring tour, taking The Taming of the Shrew to Delaware, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. In 1992, a sold-out run on the Elizabethan stage at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. was followed by SSE's first overseas tour—two weeks at the Shakespeare Globe Museum in London and two weeks at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.

During the 1990s, the company performed at hundreds of performing arts centers and educational institutions throughout the US, Canada, France, Germany, Scotland and England. In 1999, the SSE officially changed its name to Shenandoah Shakespeare and moved its headquarters to Staunton, Virginia. It then began work on a plan to create the Blackfriars Playhouse, which opened in 2001. In 2005, Shenandoah Shakespeare changed its name to the American Shakespeare Center. During the first decade of the 21st century, the American Shakespeare Center on Tour continued to provide more than 70 outstanding theatrical performances a year to audiences across the US and beyond, offering educational workshops and reaching more than 14,000 people annually.

The ASC on Tour Today
Today, the American Shakespeare Center on Tour continues to be fiercely dedicated to exceeding the expectations of its audience, recreating the festive sense of community in which patrons of Shakespeare's Blackfriars reveled during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. The 2010/11 Restless Ecstasy Tour features Shakespeare’s plays Macbeth, As You Like It, and Measure for Measure. The fall leg of the tour began on September 11 with a performance at Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Next stops include performances at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia; Virginia Union University in Richmond; and Georgetown University in Washington, DC. From there, the troupe will travel to Augusta State University in Augusta, Georgia, and then on to Loyola University in Baltimore. Several weeks will be spent in the Northeast and New England visiting places such as the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine; the University of Vermont in Burlington, Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, Connecticut; the Foothills Performing Arts Center in Oneonta, New York; the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and the University of Akron-Wayne College, Ohio. In October, the tour is pleased to perform at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, in conjunction with The Center for Leadership and Ethics at the Virginia Military Institute and the Johnson Lecture Series at Washington and Lee University. The fall tour wraps up in November with performances at Virginia State University in Richmond, the Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Holton-Arms Academy in Bethesda, Maryland.
The spring leg of the tour kicks off on January 18, 2011 with a visit to Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Next stops include visits to the Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia, and The Lyric Theatre in Blacksburg, Virginia. For much of the spring, the tour will take a southern and western route, performing at places such as the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois; Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky; Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri; Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana; New College of Florida in Sarasota, and Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia.
In all, nearly 70 performances are scheduled for the 2010/11 Restless Ecstasy Tour, with additional performances being added. To book the ASC on Tour for your venue, please call our tour operations manager M-F 9-5pm at (540) 885-5588 ext. 11.
