Director of Education

Sarah Enloe, Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in dramaturgy, Master of Letters with an emphasis in teaching from Mary Baldwin College’s Shakespeare and Performance Program, and B.F.A. in theatre studies from the University of Texas at Austin, has had a (nearly) life-long love affair with the plays of William Shakespeare. During the years of 1998-2005, Sarah taught theatre arts at the high school level in Texas. Each class she taught studied Shakespeare in some way, and each year she spent in the classroom featured award-winning productions, at least on of which was of one of Shakespeare's plays. In 2003, she won recognition as teacher of the year and an NEH fellowship to study with Shakespeare & Co in Lenox Massachusetts. It was at that institute that she first heard about the Masters in Shakespeare and Performance at Mary Baldwin College.  As soon as she returned to Texas, she made plans to further her studies.  Her theses, He Words Me: Shakespeare's New Words and How He Taught them to his Audience (2007),  and History in Three Parts, Shakespeare and Dramaturgy (2008), as well as her receipt of the Ariel Award, given for Outstanding Contribution to the Program, capped her education at Mary Baldwin College. Upon graduation, Sarah took the position of Head of Research and Archives at The American Shakespeare Center. In 2009, she moved into the position of Director of Education, where she directs programming in the areas of College Prep, Personal Renaissance, Educator Resources, and Research and Scholarship.  In addition, she serves on the Advisory board of The Shakespeare Factory, the Editorial Board of the online journal This Rough Magic, and is on the Executive Board of the Shakespeare Theatre Association.  Sarah's current work is focused on the practical application of performance techniques for the English classroom, she will participate in a seminar discussing Pedagogy at the Shakespeare Association of America in March 2013, her essay Playing with Character-Audience Members in Early Modern Playhouses will be published this summer, and she will be taking a group of life-long learners to London for a week in July.
