The actors of the American Shakespeare Center have once again assumed designing and directorial duties to produce Jonson's uproarious and fast-paced comedy about three scammers and the people they hoodwink. It's as colorful as a comic book, moves faster than a dog licking a dish and has all the social significance of a Trailways bus schedule.
Which is why "The Alchemist" is so much fun. Not a scrap of it is intended to do anything other than to amuse — which it does, in spades. Every character is a stand-alone star; every scene becomes the center of its own quirky little universe; and nearly every line is calculated to tickle even the most anemic funny bone.
