The American Shakespeare Center's Education Department offers a variety of internships through the summer and the academic year. An excellent opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in teaching or higher education, Education Internships bring you behind the scenes into the scholarship of the American Shakespeare Center.

The following internships are currently available:

MBC Undergraduate Internship

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisors: Sarah Enloe, Director of Education; Cass Morris, Academic Resources

Overview: Intern will assist with both on- and off-site workshops, as well as aiding in the preparation of materials for education events.

Specific Duties include:

• Assist in the preparation of cue scripts, handouts, and other materials for Teacher Seminars, workshops, Little Academes, Inside Plays, and other education events.
• Assist in the development of Teacher Toolboxes for Teacher Seminar sessions.
• Assist with Teacher Seminars - including packet compilation, recertification letter creation, program creation, refreshment set-up, and participation in workshop sessions.
• Participate in on-site events, including workshops, Inside Plays, and Little Academes.
• Participate in off-site events, including workshops at elementary and middle schools, career days at local venues, and promotions for Midsummer Day Camp.

Hours are flexible; ASC Education expects a minimum commitment of 90 hours total during the course of your internship.

Internship: ACADEMIC RESOURCES

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisor: Cass Morris, Academic Resources

Overview:  Assist in the creation and maintenance of the American Shakespeare Center’s resources for educators, including Study Guides, Workshops, and classroom scripts.

Specific duties include:

• Create cue scripts and other materials for use in classrooms and workshops.
• Assist in the development of new ASC workshops and activities for use in Study Guides and in-house sessions.
• Organize hard and soft copies of the current ASC workshops and activities by play and activity type (text, performance, theme, etc.)
• Assist in the construction of ASC Study Guides.
• Assist in the development of Internet-based, multi-media study guide materials, accessible through the ASC website. 
• Assist in the development of Teacher Toolboxes for Teacher Seminar sessions.
• Assist with Teacher Seminars - including packet compilation, recertification letter creation, program creation, refreshment set-up, and participation in workshop sessions.

Internship: MEDIA/TECHNOLOGY 

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisor: Cass Morris, Academic Resources; Christina Sayer Grey, Marketing Manager

Overview:  Intern will generate social media and other web-based material for both the Marketing and Education departments.

Specific duties include:

• Editing and posting ASC podcasts (prior experience with Sound Studio and Final Cut or comparable programs mandatory for this internship).
• Assisting in the audio and/or video recording of Dr. Ralph Presents lectures, Inside Plays workshops, Staged Readings, Blackfriars Backstage Passes, Actor-Scholar Councils, Teacher Seminar workshops, and other Education events.
• Editing short Marketing and/or Education videos and uploading to YouTube.
• Contributing multimedia materials for Social Media posts.
• Assisting with ASC website maintenance.
• Contributing to the ASC Interns blog.

Hours are flexible; ASC Education expects a minimum commitment of 90 hours total during the course of your internship.

Internship: DRAMATURGICAL RESEARCH

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisor: Cass Morris, Academic Resources

Specific duties include:

• Create a searchable soft-copy library of MLitt/MFA theses.
• Index MLitt/MFA theses, creating a searchable database of materials and ideas covered in each.
• Research and organize historical documentation of Original Practices for scholars, students, and critics.
• Assist in the redesign of the Blackfriars Playhouse tour, providing historical information and accompanying documentation.
• Assist in the development of new ASC workshops and activities for use in Study Guides and in-house sessions.
• Assist in the redesign of the ASC Study Guides.
• Create cue scripts for use in classrooms and workshops.

Hours are flexible; ASC Education expects a minimum commitment of 90 hours total during the course of your internship.

Internship: SHAKESPEARE'S THEATRES AND ARCHIVES

Credit Hours: 3

Time per week: Varies, 10-30 hours per week

Internship Supervisor: Sarah Enloe, Director of Education

This is an unpaid internship.
This internship involves but is not limited to the following: create an annotated bibliography of references to the Blackfriars and the Globe, research pertinent architectural/structural questions for Globe II, facilitate communication between research team members.

Internship: AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE CENTER HOSPITALITY

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisor: Sarah Enloe, Director of Education; Jennifer Jones, Box Office Manager

Overview:  Assist in the creation and maintenance of the American Shakespeare Center’s hospitality plan.

Specific duties include:

• Develop a plan for ASC’s continuing expansion of guest services in receptions, meet and greets, supply ordering
• Execute various guest services functions in order to observe first hand how they work currently
• Develop and maintain a plan for distribution of information in packets
• Develop a visitor’s guide to Staunton including parking, lodging, and dining options
• Train staff to continue developed hospitality plan

Internship: EDUCATION AND GROUP SALES INTERN

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisor:  Jennifer Darby, Education and Group Sales Manager

Overview: The Education and Group Sales Internship with the American Shakespeare Center is an opportunity for early career arts administrators to develop their abilities while learning skills necessary to succeed.  This internship offers the chance to learn to coordinate a variety of arts educational programming in a renowned and nationally respected theater.

Duties will include:

• providing administrative support to the Education and Group Sales Manager
• assisting with the coordination of school workshops
• aiding in dramaturgical research; conducting internet research
• participating in departmental staff meetings

The preferred candidate has at least 1 year of college experience who, if not already graduated, is currently studying Education, Theater, Arts Administration or a related field. Ideal candidates possess the following skills: organized, efficient, accommodating to change, excellent interpersonal skills, personable and able to multi-task. Computer skills: Microsoft Office (such as MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook) as well as Internet research skills.

Internship: AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE CENTER THEATER CAMP DRAMATURG

Credit Hours: 3

Internship Supervisor: Director of College Prep Programs

Overview:  Assist in the creation of American Shakespeare Center’s resources for campers, including packets on each play in the Summer Camp season. Attend rehearsals as text coach. Work with Directors to cut texts to one-hour, paying special attention to maintaining continuity.

Specific duties include:

• Create cue scripts for use in rehearsals.
• Read, research 3 plays.
• Create information packets for high school students with a College Prep aim.
• Work with the Play’s director to cut the texts to 1200 lines while maintaining continuity.
• Requires strong background verse, scansion, and rhetoric.

Hours are flexible in Spring, must commit to afternoon rehearsals during Summer Camp sessions (Session 1: June 15-July 8, 2013; Session 2: July 13-August 5, 2013).

Internship: AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE CENTER THEATER CAMP HISTORIAN

Credit Hours: 3

Internship available: Summer 2013

Internship Supervisor: Director of College Prep Programs

Overview:  Assist in the creation and maintenance of the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp Blog and Flickr accounts.

Specific duties include:

• Interview counselors and campers
• Observe rehearsals and classes
• Write blog entries and tweet regarding camp events
• Chronicle, through photography, daily camp life

Hours: Morning sessions, afternoon rehearsals, and evening programming during summer camps. (Session 1: June 15-July 8, 2012; Session 2: July 13-August 5, 2012).

Internship: AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE CENTER THEATER CAMP ADMINISTRATOR

Credit Hours: 3

Internship available: Summer 2013

Internship Supervisor: Director of College Prep Programs

Overview:  Assist Camp Artistic Director and Camp Life Manager in tracking registration and payments, budgets, and creation of documents, mailings, etc

Specific duties include:

• Use Excel to track registrations and payments
• Arrange for first day, receptions, etc
• Work with Camp Artistic Director to facilitate relations with MBC printing services and IT
• Work with marketing to create performance day programs
• Track expenses and work with Camp Life Manager to maintain balanced budget

Hours 2013 Summer camps (Session 1: June 13-July 8, 2013; Session 2: July 13-August 5, 2013) and 3 weeks preceeding.
