In his masterpiece that predates almost all Shakespeare’s plays, Marlowe breathtakingly conjures Helen of Troy, the Seven Deadly Sins, good angels and bad angels, Satan himself, and devils to drag Faustus to hell. Doctor Faustus is a story of a man selling his soul, not for riches, but knowledge and power. Marlowe’s fascination with the temptations of magic and the outer limits of ambition are amazingly contemporary, making Doctor Faustus and Everyman, and in his struggle with good and evil, he champions what is most daring in the human spirit.
