The American Shakespeare Center has an...impressive Tamburlaine in the form of James Keegan, who dishes up his most powerful performance of the season. Although intense and exuding a stage presence that tends to affect the very light and air around him, Keegan skillfully avoids a one-dimensional portrayal of Tamburlaine — which, given the character's implacable nature, would be easy to do.

Instead, under the direction of Jim Warren, he weaves a spellbinding portrait of a man whose unwavering cruelty and march toward domination are mitigated, if only marginally, by his love for a woman.
