ELIZABETHAN & JACOBEAN SEATING OPTIONS
At the Blackfriars Playhouse, you experience Shakespeare’s plays as audiences did four centuries ago, but with modern creature comforts thrown in. Choose from seven levels of seating:

  • Lords’ Chairs with carved wooden armrests, plump cushions, and leather seatbacks. The best seats in the house, then and now.
  • Gallants’ Stools* directly on stage. These seats put you right in the middle of the action.
  • Premium Seating benches have cushions and a seatback, and gets you up close and personal to the actors.
  • Section A benches have cushions and seatbacks, make up most of the house, and offer you an amazing view from the upper or lower levels.
  • Upper Level benches have cushions, and puts you up against the railing for a bird’s-eye-view unlike any other in the playhouse.
  • Restricted View benches also have cushions, but offer more economical seating in the upper level.
  • Obstructed View benches in the lower level are a great option if you want the downstairs feel at the upstairs price. However, because the Blackfriars Playhouse is a historically accurate re-creation, you will have to navigate around some columns.

  • Don’t like your seat? Pick another! Once the show begins, patrons can and are encouraged to move to any empty seats available.

*Please Note: Empty Gallants’ Stools are released to all patrons during the preshow speech (approximately 15 minutes before curtain). Plan to arrive 15-30 minutes before show time to claim your reserved Gallants’ Stools.

    Special Performances
Tickets to some performances are specially priced. Please see our calendar for events with special pricing.

    Seating
The authentic shape and design of the Playhouse means that some seats are at an acute angle to the stage, some are above the stage and some are directly in front of the stage. Our pricing structure takes into consideration these positions of seats. As part of re-creating seventeenth century performance conditions there is no seat in the upper level from which the action may not be obscured at some point, however a clear view of the balcony is available. Additionally, many of the lower level seats may have a bit of obstruction when viewing the actors on the balcony, but a clearer view of the actors while they are on stage. We encourage a "general admission" feel, so if you don't care for your seat, please feel free to move to any empty seat once the dialogue has begun.
