Job Description

The American Shakespeare Center (ASC), a $3 million Equity theatre and educational center, seeks experienced candidates for the position of Managing Director. The Managing Director is the chief administrative officer and chief financial officer of the ASC, providing leadership for the departments of Finance, Marketing & Sales, Development, and other administrative functions. As the chief financial officer responsible for the preparation and administration of the company’s comprehensive budget, the Managing Director is involved in all aspects of earned and contributed income development. As guided by the ASC’s strategic plan (outlined in the accompanying Fact Sheet), the Managing Director is a leader in the development and execution of strategies to enhance the financial sustainability of the ASC, strengthen the governance and organizational structure, and plan for the development of Globe II. The Managing Director also contributes to the development and execution of strategies to expand the ASC’s national and international reputation, deepening the ASC’s contributions and connections to our local community, and continuing to pioneer through the ASC’s artistic and educational endeavors.

Headquartered in Staunton, Virginia, the ASC performs and educates at the Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor playhouse, 51 weeks per year. The ASC is also preparing to build the world’s only re-creation of the 1614 Globe theatre. In addition, the ASC on Tour is the most active Shakespeare touring company in America. Of equal importance to its artistic productions, the ASC’s education and research activities are central to its mission.

The Managing Director reports directly to and supports the Board of Trustees, and works within a management team that includes the Artistic Director and Director of Mission. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred), demonstrated experience in financial and human resources management (preferably within a performing arts organization), and strong leadership and strategic planning skills. Compensation leads the range of salaries for companies of similar budgets as presented in TCG surveys.
