Mary Baldwin College, in partnership with American Shakespeare Center, has combined the academic and applied aspects of Shakespearean theatrical studies to offer a unique Master of Letters/Master of Fine Arts in Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature in Performance.
The ASC is hosting a five-week institute for college teachers during which we will use our celebrated re-creation of Shakespeare's Blackfriars Playhouse, a Globe II "footprint" and stage mock-up, our highly acclaimed resident Equity troupe, and eight significant scholars of early modern English Drama to explore how an understanding of the playing space and the playing practices illuminate the text.
The American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriar Conference, inaugurated in 2001 to celebrate the opening of the Blackfriars Playhouse. This five-day conference focusing on Early Modern Drama, attracts an international audience of scholars and is held in October every other year. Check back in the winter quarter of 2008 for information about the 2009 conference.
The Bring 'Em Back Alive reading series draws regional actors together, scripts in hand, to perform a lively interpretation of lesser known works from the Renaissance. In the laboratory that is our Blackfriars Playhouse, come help us to discover the joy of these treasures that thrilled Shakespeare's London. At the interval, enjoy coffee and light refreshment with the actors. Donations are accepted at the door. All readings start at 7:30pm in the Blackfriars Playhouse. FREE.
The ASC is committed to encouraging new works which are set in the early modern period; are adaptations, translations, or conflations of early modern plays; or are plays that embrace original staging practices. The ASC regularly considers new works for production at the Blackfriars Playhouse.
